A deepwater oil rig is a small place when there's a murderer onboard....
The story of some very different people damaged by the same tragedy, the explosion and sinking of a deepwater oil rig. Three years later, their paths cross offshore, summoned by fate to settle scores and uncover secrets — or keep them hidden forever.
Sandy Atwood, strong, intelligent and a striking beauty besides, was once a star investigative reporter. Now she drinks her way through seedy South Louisiana bars looking for answers. A year earlier, the rig disaster tore her world apart. With the help of Jack Daniels whiskey, she plies a sleazy service hand for information. He lets slip the rumor of a murder aboard the doomed rig the night it went down.
Cory Calhoun, a skittish, somewhat nerdy engineer is about to marry a woman who barely hides her affair with his best friend. Cory wants nothing more than a safe, white-collar life without any hint of adventure, much less danger. He works at his family’s company, which built the blowout preventer that failed during the rig disaster.
A sober and focused Sandy gets herself aboard the replacement rig, ostensibly to film a small-time cable documentary. There she meets Cory, who’s reluctantly arrived onboard despite his fears and misgivings, in order to repair “his baby,” which is an improved blowout preventer he invented after the disaster. At first, the two bump heads, but only because they are so similar—intelligent and quick with sarcastic quips that they use as shields to protect their vulnerabilities. But, over the course of time, sparks fly.
Once Cory and Sandy give in to their mutual attraction, she hesitantly confides that she’s actually onboard to seek justice. Cory, carrying guilt over the small part he feels he played in the disaster, comes to realize that her quest leads toward the redemption he truly needs. They join forces to steal incriminating “black box” data retrieved from the sunken rig. But within the data is a horrific secret that could cost them their lives.
